2023 Porter Prize Terms & Conditions
Entry deadline
- Entries for the 2023 Porter Prize will be accepted until midnight, 3 October 2022.
Prizes
- The winner will receive AU$6,000.
- The other four shortlisted poets will each receive AU$1,000
Who can enter?
- Entries are welcome from living poets anywhere in the world.
- There is no age limit.
- ABR staff and board members are not eligible.
- ABR contributors, interns and volunteers may enter.
How to enter
- Entries must be submitted online via the ABR website entry page.
- Multiple entries are permitted.
- Entries should preferably be a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx).
- PDFs are accepted if necessary for the poem’s format.
- Entrants will receive automatic confirmation of receipt.
Format
- Entries must be a single poem of no more than 70 lines, written in English.
- Font: Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 12 pt, black.
- The pages should be numbered.
- Stanza breaks must be clearly indicated.
- The author’s name must not appear anywhere in the document or in the name of the digital file.
- The file name should only include the title of the poem.
What does it cost to enter a poem?
- Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of AU$25, or AU$15 for current ABR subscribers. To qualify for the lower entry fee, entrants must hold a current print or digital subscription.
- If you don’t already have a digital subscription to ABR, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single poem for a total of AU$85. You can then enter subsequent poems at the discounted rate of $15 each.
- If you don’t already subscribe to ABR’s print edition, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single poem for the following rates: $105 (Australia), $190 (New Zealand/Asia), or $210 (ROW).
- If you choose not to subscribe to ABR (print or online) when you enter the Prize and you are not already an ABR subscriber, you will receive digital access to ABR free of charge for four months. Your complimentary digital ABR subscription will be processed automatically, and you will receive an email with more information after submitting your prize entry.
Terms and conditions
- Entries may be offered elsewhere during the judging of the Porter Prize. If an entrant is longlisted and has their poem offered elsewhere, the entrant will have 24 hours to decide if they would like to withdraw their poem on offer elsewhere or from the Porter Prize. Exclusivity is essential for longlisted poems.
- Entries will be deemed ineligible if they are under contract to another publisher or broadcaster.
- Poems will be removed from longlists or shortlists if we discover they have been published elsewhere.
- Entries must be original works written by an individual living author.
- Entries must not infringe upon anyone’s copyright.
- Entries must not contain any dedications. If a poem is later shortlisted, a dedication can be added then.
- Entries that are deemed to be works of plagiarism will be disqualified.
- Authors of longlisted poems not shortlisted will be notified as soon as possible.
- Entries must contain nothing obscene, libellous, unlawful, defamatory, or anything ABR may deem to be inappropriate.
- Previously published, prize-winning, or broadcast poems will not be accepted. (Previous online appearances constitute prior publication.)
- Poems entered in past Porter Prizes but not publicly shortlisted may be re-entered.
- Translations are not eligible.
- If entrants subsequently withdraw their entries, the entry fee will not be refunded.
- Shortlisted poets may be required to take part in events and media activities.
- The prize money also covers digital publication in ABR and in the print edition.
- Copyright in the poem(s) remains with the poet.
The judging process
- Judging is completely anonymous.
- The judges are Sarah Holland-Batt, Des Cowley, and James Jiang.
- ABR reserves the right not to award a prize.
- A shortlist comprising a maximum of five poems will be announced and those poems will appear in the January–February 2023 issue of ABR.
- The winner will be announced at a ceremony to which all entrants will be invited.
- The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or the judging process.
Declaration
To be eligible, entrants must tick the declaration box on the online entry page.

ABR Inspiring Travel Writing Competition Terms and Conditions
This prize consists of:
- A ten (10) day, nine (9) night private luxury Abercrombie & Kent journey in India (including our 7-Day ‘Essential India’ itinerary plus your choice of a 3-day extension to either Ranthambore, Udaipur or Varanasi) for two people valued at up to $8,250 and excluding international airfares.
- Accommodation as per the itinerary: Two nights at The Imperial New Delhi (Delhi), one night at The Oberoi Amarvilas (Agra), three nights at Rambagh Palace (Jaipur) and two nights at Taj Lake Palace (Udaipur), plus two nights in either Ranthambore, Udaipur or Varanasi.
- Transfers as per the itinerary
- Breakfast daily, and lunch and/or dinner on select days specified in itinerary
- A&K airport welcome, and assistance with luggage
The prize component/s provided by Abercrombie & Kent Australia, described above:
- are valid for travel, accommodation, meals and tours provided by Abercrombie & Kent Australia only. Travel date and accommodation date restrictions may apply. All bookings must be coordinated and booked through Abercrombie & Kent Australia.
- cannot be taken in conjunction with any other Abercrombie & Kent offer.
- are valid for travel before 1 December 2021.
- the tour as described is available on a positive space basis. Abercrombie & Kent Australia will do everything possible to accommodate proposed dates, times and travel dates, but due to space limitations alternatives are sometimes required.
General Conditions
- Entry is open to all current individual Australian Book Review subscribers (print or online) who are 18 years and over.
- Entry is not open to Australian Book Review or Abercrombie & Kent Australia employees or their immediate families. ABR Board members and their families are not eligible.
- Only one entry per person is allowed. Entrants can only enter in their own name.
- Entries will close on February 20, 2020
- Entrants agree that their contact details will be added to Australian Book Review and Abercrombie & Kent marketing databases for future communication. Entrants can subsequently opt-out from these marketing lists.
- The winning entry by an eligible entrant will be selected by Australian Book Review on the basis of the creativity and originality of the entry.
- Winner will be notified by phone or email on March 16 2020 and will be announced publicly online at www.australianbookreview.com.au from March 31 2020 and in the Australian Book Review April 2020 issue.
- Eligibility of the winner to take up the prize will be established when the winner is contacted.
- If the winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within 48 hours of notification, Australian Book Review and Abercrombie & Kent reserves the right to select another winner.
- A formal letter confirming the prize will be sent to the winner in due course. The winner needs to present the original letter to redeem Abercrombie & Kent Australia prize components. All bookings must be coordinated and booked through Abercrombie & Kent Australia.
- The prize must be booked within six months from 31 March 2020 for travel before 31 December 2021. Certain elements of the prize may be unavailable on certain dates depending on accommodation blackout periods or other seasonal factors.
- No responsibility is taken for seasonal variation in the value of the prize according to seasonal fluctuations and ticket types available.
- A valid passport is required for all international journeys.
- Prize does not include international flights. Winner and accompanying guest must make their own way to Delhi, India for the start of the prize journey. Abercrombie & Kent can help arrange international flights at the winner’s expense
- Prize does not include travel insurance. Adequate travel insurance for the duration of the trip is required and must be organised by the winner at his/her expense.
- Spending money, personal expenses, meals outside those stipulated in the prize, tips, excess baggage, taxes and airport charges, passports, visas and transport to and from airport of departure and all other ancillary costs associated with redeeming the prize are the responsibility of the winner.
- The prize (or any part thereof) cannot be sold, is not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be taken for cash.
- Normal Abercrombie & Kent Terms and Conditions of Bookings apply to the prize. Any item not specified is not included in the prize
- Tour Includes: All arrangements as specified in the prize itinerary
- Tour Excludes: International airfares, any arrangements not specified in the prize itinerary – guests may be subject to visa fees; airport taxes (unless specified); insurance; tips to representatives, guides and drivers
- The prize must be taken as stated and no compensation will be payable if a winner is unable to use the prize as stated. The prize cannot be amended or changed in anyway and is not exchangeable or redeemable for cash or other goods or services. A prize cannot be transferred to any other person
- If any prize (or part of any prize) is unavailable, the Promoter, in its discretion, reserves the right to substitute the prize (or that part of the prize) with a prize to the equal value and/or specification
- The itinerary cannot be altered or amended
- Australian Book Review and Abercrombie & Kent’s decisions with respect to all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Calibre Essay Prize - Terms & Conditions
Entry deadline
- Entries for the 2023 Calibre Essay Prize will be accepted until 11:59 pm (AEST), 30 December 2022. (NB: This means at the end of the day on 30 December 2022.)
Prizes
- The winner will receive AU$5,000.
- The runner-up will receive AU$2,500.
Who can enter?
- Entries are welcome from living writers writing in English anywhere in the world.
- There is no age limit.
- ABR staff and board members are not eligible to enter.
- ABR contributors, volunteers, and interns may enter.
How to enter
- Entries must be submitted online via the ABR website entry page.
- Multiple entries are permitted, but each must be entered as separate transactions.
- The author’s name must not appear in the essay or in the title of the digital file because judging is conducted blind.
- Entrants will receive automatic confirmation of receipt to the email address used when entering.
Format
- Entries are only permitted in Word documents (.doc or .docx)
- Essays must be written in English.
- Entries must be a single non-fiction essay of 2,000 to 5,000 words (any endnotes should be included in that word count).
- The text should be presented with 1.5 line spacing and in 12 pt font size.
- The pages should be numbered.
- The file name should only include the title of the essay. Entrants should not include their own name in the file name.
- Images are allowed, but the total file size must not exceed 3MB.
Exclusivity
- Entries may be offered elsewhere during the judging of the Calibre Prize.
- If an entrant is longlisted and has offered their essay elsewhere, the entrant will have 24 hours to decide if they would like to withdraw their essay on offer elsewhere or from the Calibre Prize.
- Exclusivity is essential for longlisted essays to remain in contention.
- The shortlist will be announced in April 2023 when the winning essay will be published. It is our expectation that the authors of non-shortlisted essays will be notified in March 2023.

Publication
- Our expectation is that the winning essays will require little editing apart from the application of house style. ABR will edit both essays and show the authors changes for their approval. The essayists will be involved throughout and will be shown successive proofs.
- The winning essay will be published in the April 2023 issue (print and online). The runner-up will be published in the May, June, or July 2023 issue (print and online).
- Authorship of the winning essays will be fully acknowledged in the ABR print and online issues and in all related material.
- Copyright in the two winning essays resides with the authors. The winner and runner-up grant the Australian Book Review an exclusive licence to publish their winning essays in the relevant ABR issue (print and online edition) for three months from the date of first publication in the issue, and thereafter a non-exclusive licence indefinitely to publish in the relevant online issue.
- If syndication or anthologisation of the winning essays is mooted, ABR will consult the winning essayists for approval. The essayists will receive 50 per cent of any syndication fees and 100 per cent of any anthology fees.
The Judging Process
- Judging is completely anonymous.
- The entrant’s name must not appear in the Word file or in the file name.
- The judges are Yves Rees, Peter Rose, and Beejay Silcox.
- The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or the judging process.

- ABR will publish the shortlisted stories in the August or September 2022 issue and will announce the overall winner at a special ceremony later in the month of publication. All entrants will be invited.
- The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or the judging process.
- We are unable to provide feedback about individual entries.
- ABR reserves the right not to award a prize.
